Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 3/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1 cup unsalted butter room temperature
  • 1/2 cup powdered sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 teaspoons cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
For the Glaze (Optional):
  • 1 1/4 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 cup maple syrup
  • 1/2-1 tablespoon milk optional

Method

Mix Dry Ingredients:
  1. In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, cinnamon, baking soda, and salt.
Cream Butter and Sugars:
  1. In a large mixing bowl, cream together butter, brown sugar, and powdered sugar until light and fluffy.
Combine Wet and Dry Ingredients:
  1. Add egg and vanilla extract to the butter mixture. Gradually add the dry ingredients, mixing until just combined. Optionally, chill the dough for 30-40 minutes.
Portion the Dough:
  1. Roll the dough into 1-inch balls and place on an ungreased baking sheet, spacing them 2 inches apart.
Bake:
  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and bake for 10-11 minutes, until edges are lightly browned. Let the cookies cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
Prepare the Glaze (Optional):
  1. In a large bowl, whisk together powdered sugar, vanilla extract, and maple syrup. Adjust the consistency with milk if needed. Drizzle over cooled cookies and let set.

Notes

  • Chilling the Dough: Chilling the dough helps to firm it up, making it easier to handle and resulting in thicker, chewier cookies.
  • Glaze Variation: You can add different extracts or a splash of bourbon to the glaze for a unique twist.
  • Storage: Store cookies in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 5 days or freeze for up to 3 months.
