Method
Prepare the Bread
- Thoroughly butter one side of each slice of rye bread and set aside.
Make the Patties
- Combine ground beef, black pepper, sea salt, and onion powder in a bowl. Mix until the seasonings are evenly distributed.
- Divide the mixture into three equal portions and shape into patties that match the shape of the bread.
Cook the Patties
- Preheat a nonstick skillet over medium-high heat.
- Add the patties to the skillet and cook for 2-3 minutes on one side. Carefully flip and cook for another 2-3 minutes.
- Reduce the heat to low and cook for an additional 5 minutes, ensuring the center is no longer pink.
- Use a digital thermometer to check that the internal temperature reaches 160°F (71°C). Once done, remove the patties from heat and set aside.
Make the Sauce
- In a small bowl, combine mayonnaise, ketchup, bacon bits, sweet relish, and sugar. Mix well until smooth, then set aside.
Assemble the Patty Melts
- Heat a second skillet over medium-low heat.
- Place one slice of buttered rye bread (butter-side down) into the skillet.
- Layer with two slices of cheddar cheese, a beef patty, and two slices of Provolone cheese.
- Spread the sauce on the unbuttered side of another bread slice and place it sauce-side down on top of the cheese.
Toast to Perfection
- Cook for 2-3 minutes on each side or until the bread is golden brown and the cheese is melted.
- Repeat the process for the remaining sandwiches.
Serve and Enjoy
- Once all patty melts are ready, serve them warm with your favorite sides or dipping sauces.
