Step 1: Prepare the Mashed Potatoes
- Boil the Potatoes: Place the peeled and cubed potatoes into a large pot of salted water. Bring to a boil over high heat and cook until the potatoes are tender, about 15-20 minutes. You can check the doneness by piercing a potato cube with a fork; it should easily slide off.
- Drain and Mash: Drain the potatoes and return them to the pot. Add the milk, butter, and salt. Using a potato masher or hand mixer, mash the potatoes until they are smooth and creamy. Taste and adjust seasoning if necessary. Cover and set aside to keep warm.
Step 2: Make the Ground Beef Gravy
- Cook the Ground Beef: In a large skillet, cook the ground beef over medium heat until browned. Be sure to break up the meat into small crumbles as it cooks. Once browned, drain any excess fat from the skillet to keep the gravy from being too greasy.
- Add Onions and Garlic: Add the finely chopped onion and minced garlic to the skillet. Cook, stirring occasionally, until the onions are soft and translucent, about 5 minutes.
- Thicken the Gravy: Sprinkle the flour over the beef mixture and stir to coat. Cook for 1 minute to eliminate the raw flour taste. Gradually stir in the beef broth, whisking constantly to avoid lumps. Add the Worcestershire sauce and bring the mixture to a simmer. Continue stirring until the gravy thickens, about 5-7 minutes.
- Season to Taste: Season the gravy with salt and pepper to your liking. Taste and adjust as needed.
Step 3: Serve the Dish
- Plate the Dish: Spoon a generous serving of mashed potatoes onto each plate. Ladle the hot ground beef gravy over the top, allowing it to pool around the potatoes.
- Enjoy: Serve immediately and enjoy this comforting, hearty meal!
Notes
- Browning the Beef: Ensure you brown the beef thoroughly as it adds depth of flavor to the gravy.
- Thickening the Gravy: If the gravy is too thin, you can mix a little more flour with water and stir it in, cooking until thickened. If too thick, thin it out with additional beef broth.
- Mashing the Potatoes: For the smoothest mashed potatoes, make sure to mash them while they're still hot and be careful not to over-mix, as this can make them gluey.
